The number of people I meet that have never heard of Malta always astonishes me. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, this tiny island that I made the move to Malta and lived on for nearly two years hardly gets any attention; even Europeans don’t know where it is! It truly is the island no one ever hears about and one of the best island destinations in Europe.
Usually, travelers are more well-versed when it comes to world geography and on-goings. However, not even the most well-versed travelers know about this island country in the Mediterranean (one of the best island destinations in Europe, let me remind you).
I remember when I first decided to move here, people from back home kept asking me, “What is Malta?” And even after I moved, people in Malta kept asking, “Why Malta?” It’s not common for Americans to visit Malta – much less live here or see any American citizens living abroad. I began to question myself. Why, out of any place in the world, would I choose to move to Malta? I obviously needed to get out and answer this question for myself.
Best Island Destinations: Why I Love Malta
Over the past few weeks, I’ve challenged myself to get out and explore the country I live in. It’s easy, just as it is anywhere else, to become complacent with where you are and your daily routines and never get out to explore.
“I have all of my life to see my city,” I tell it to myself all the time. But at what point do I actually get out to see it all? I noticed a few weeks ago that my life in Malta had become largely centered on writing all day long and going out at night. I looked forward to free days not so I could explore but because I had time to write. That’s fine, I love writing. But at the same time, I won’t be in Malta forever. Malta is one of the best island destinations! I need to get out! Why would I move to Malta if I could get the same experiences I could get at home?
So with a few relatively open weeks away from work, I decided to get out and take a stay-cation around the island. What I’ve found is that it makes me happier. A breath of fresh sea air and a vista is all I need for a good detox. I’ve gone camping a few times, hiked more than a few times, and finally seen things that I’ve been putting off for an entire year.
I’ve rediscovered why I’m here and just how much I love my move to Malta. Its people, its landscapes, and the culture – everything about it is so charming. And part of its charm comes from the fact that it is so undiscovered by the rest of the world as one of the best island destinations.
Move to Malta: Becoming an Expert on a Place
I was recently thinking about how one becomes an expert of a city. What I mean by that is someone that people go to for advice for just about anything to do with a city; someone with experience and connections all over the city and surrounding areas. I lived in Kansas City for the better part of 20 years. Still, I think someone visiting Kansas City for a week would know more in’s and out’s of the city than I do by the end of a week.
I never pushed myself to explore the city like I do when I’m visiting other new cities. So I was thinking; when does one become an expert on a city with all the knowledge a visitor would need? The answer I came up with is never. If you claim to be an expert, that means you’ve seen it all (or at least most of it) and there’s no more need to explore.
However, there’s always room to explore. There will always be a cool new dive bar you’ve never heard about or a rooftop you haven’t climbed. No one can truly say they’ve done it all no matter where you are in the world. That’s why expat life in Malta is so incredible. There’s always motivation to explore.
Move to Malta: Challenges for Americans Living Abroad
I’m going to continue to challenge myself to discover new things about Malta each week. As much as I want ample time to write, I also want to stay active in Malta. Just this week, it has led to meeting new friends, becoming closer to old friends, and finding secret hiking trails that I never knew existed.
I do consider myself to be well-educated about the in’s and out’s of Malta, but not at a local level. But maybe I never want to reach a local’s level of knowledge. At that point, would I revert back to my Kansas City mentality of “I’ll explore later on”? I think I want to stay forever getting accustomed to expat life in Malta. And, who’s to say that every local in Malta knows more about their country than I do? I’m sure not every local has seen all that I have of their island.
Best Island Destinations: Your Chance to Visit Malta
Over the past year, I have encouraged so many to visit or move to Malta. It truly is one of the greatest countries I’ve ever been to and most people will never even hear about one of the best island destinations in Europe.
Sadly, I know it could be a bit unrealistic for some to move to Malta. For others, even after sharing my experiences and everything that is good about Malta, I don’t envision them coming to Malta anytime soon. However, if you ever get the motivation, move to Malta and give yourself a chance to fall in love with the island. I promise it won’t take long. I also want to invite any and all visitors to meet up!
